Sechelt Rapids Invertebrate Life

The Walls of Sechelt Rapids have a thick coat of invertebrate color.

In April of 2010 I joined a group of divers heading up to the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia Canada.  We explored Sechelt Inlet and Agamemnon Channel with help from the folks at Porpoise Bay Charters. Sechelt Inlet is a fjord with tidal flow restricted by narrows. At these restrictions tidal flows are very strong – up to 16knots at times, while elsewhere the currents are minimal.

We enjoyed an amazing density of colorful life in Sechelt Rapids, and were astounded by the size and number of Cloud Sponges in Agamemnon Channel . Some of us were lucky enough to get a glimpse of the rare Candelabra Gorgonian Sea Fans. I noticed that both Quillback and Yelloweye Rockfish have had strong year classes recently – juveniles of both species are quite common.
